Since we are growing and growing, our app no longer fulfil all the needs. We were tasked to design for a new South East Asia theme ride-hailing app.
I was assigned to a role in visual design revamp group, I focused on designing the map experience and the animation of allocation.
As we are assigned to design a S.E.A. theme ride-hailing app we decided not to stay in office, rather we went outside to explored and learn about what is S.E.A, the past and the future.
We found S.E.A. culture was inspired by the thing surrounding them. You can see nature inspiration from the architecture, fabric, fashion and so on.
And this research process helped me to design a S.E.A theme map. We need to not just focus on the visual aesthetic but also consider the usability and readability of the map. At the end of day function is still the most important thing of the map.
During the design process, we kept trying to incorporate Grab green into the map, it didn't turned out well due to some readability issue and also it created a muddy type of look, and that's not something we are looking for.
Finally we have a version we are happy enough to represent the idea of S.E.A.
Blue from the ocean and sky, green from the mountain, yellow from the sunshine.
We have to make sure the contrast is good enough in terms of usability, whether or not user able to recognise the name of the road or an attraction. We constantly test out the colour, indoor, outdoor on the street to make sure we are in good shape.
We also have to put attention on what's on the map. We have a lot of different elements on the map to help our user get around.
We have to design a guideline for our map components. And most importantly, how they interact with each other, we need to consider all the edge cases.
This is the process we are allocate our driver to our passenger. We got inspiration from the nature as well. We want to design something from the ripple that cause by the water drop, It give a sense of peacefulness.
I worked closely with UI designer to make sure when we put our stuff together we want to have a cohesive visual language on our design.
Map take up to 70% of the home screen. with this new approach we are aiming to create a new brand image to our user, not the old muddy, laggy app. Rather something pop out in your hand at the same time people are able to recognise what app it is in the crowd.
Of course there are things that we can improve from this. All the map element interact on the map also the fundamental user research we can do, things like how people navigate the map, how they read, how they find ways, etc. We hope in the future this can be part of iteration.
